2016 Visit to Marks Hall Estate

After hearing Jonathan Jukes' marvellous talk about Marks Hall Estate, 30 members and guests of the Gardening Club made their way to the Estate near Coggeshall in Essex. The weather was perfect for an evening visit and after being fed from a lovely selection of cakes we were led on a walk around the grounds by Jonathan. We were shown the site of the old mansion, later an American air base and were told some of the history and the future of that particular area. From there we walked along the Birkett Long Millennium Walk which bordered the lake into a more open area planted with beautiful Asian trees. The walk led to the Walled Garden with a more formal planting and contemporary design providing glimpses of the lake through walkways. The reflections of the Millenium Walk were lovely and we were all hoping that we would be able to return and see the Autumn reflections of the silver birches and dogwoods. As before, Jonathan's talks brought alive the history and the mammoth task that had already been carried out with much more still to be done.
